BASHI ARTS
Revolutionizing dance, empowering South Brooklyn.
Accessible, vibrant, & homegrown from the cultural landscape of Brooklyn, NY.
Bashi Arts is a Black and Disabled woman-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to advancing experimental approaches to contemporary dance choreography, research, and pedagogy through practices grounded in Disability Justice, Black feminist pedagogies, Africanist aesthetics, and affordability.
We understand contemporary dance in its most expansive senseāa multidisciplinary art form grounded in theory, culture, civic engagement, and both concert and commercial dance practices.
Centering Black and Disabled artists' priorities, the Bashi philosophy actively rejects colonized notions of what a dancer should be and look like, and does not engage with a false diversity cloaked in respectability politics. Instead, celebrating the complexities of our community, and rejecting all forms of tokenism, ableism, racism, and binarism.
With roots in the southern-most neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Bashi Arts is dedicated to uplifting Brooklyn as a global center for contemporary dance, multidisciplinary arts, and culture.
Bashi Arts looks forward to establishing a state-of-the-art performing arts space to support the historically underserved South Brooklyn arts community with affordable, high-quality, dance-based programming, professional development offerings, artistic research opportunities, and resources for movement artists of all ages.
